Car Alignment And Suspension

For A Smoother Ride And Extended Tire Life

The power steering pump generates extremely high temperatures and pressures that can cause failure without notice. High quality BG power steering fluid will make sure that doesn’t happen.

If Your Vehicles Suspension Is Not Performing Correctly, You're in for a Rough Ride.

If your vehicle is exhibiting any symptoms such as drifting/ pulling to one side, making strange noises when turning or going over bumps, is becoming difficult to steer, or any other Symptoms Of Bad Suspension, be sure to bring your vehicle in to Personal Auto Repair for a free 50 point safety check. We'll test drive your vehicle, get it up on a lift, and find out what is causing that symptom free of charge. We want you and the other drivers around you to be as safe as possible while driving.

What Is Suspension In Your Vehicle?

Suspension is the system of tires, springs, shock absorbers, and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels. It's designed to provide steering stability with good handling and to ensure a comfortable ride for the passengers.

How Does It Work And Why Is It Important?

According to Newton's laws of motion, all forces have both magnitude and direction. A bump in the road causes the wheel to move up and down perpendicular to the road surface. The magnitude depends on the size of the bump in the road. Either way, the car wheel experiences a vertical acceleration as it passes over an imperfection. Without an intervening structure, all of wheel's vertical energy is transferred to the frame, which moves in the same direction. In such a situation, the wheels can lose contact with the road completely. Then, under the downward force of gravity, the wheels can slam back into the road surface. What you need is a system that will absorb the energy of the vertically accelerated wheel, allowing the frame and body to ride undisturbed while the wheels follow bumps in the road.

How Do You Maintain Your Suspension?

The easiest thing you can do is check your tires air pressure and tread. Proper air pressure ensures your vehicle will be safe from tire blowouts and prevents unnecessary tire tread wear. If you see any signs of abnormal tread wear, then your vehicle may be under/over inflated or in need of an alignment. Check you power steering fluid level and belt tightness. Low fluid or a slipping can cause damage to expensive power steering components. Power steering fluid should be changed, on average, every 45,000 - 60,000 miles, You can check your owners manual for the exact recommended mileage for your vehicle. Inspect bushing and joints for any wear. older vehicles may need their joints lubricated periodically while newer vehicles have sealed joints that do not require periodic lubrication. Inspect your shocks and struts for any leaks and do the "bounce test" to see if they need to be replaced. leaking fluids from the shocks and struts can leak on and damage other suspension parts. Bad shocks and struts and cause unnecessary tread wear and affect steering control.

Symptoms Of Bad Suspension

Vehicle Rides Rough

Drifting or pulling to the left or right

Dips or nosedives while stopping

Squatting backwards while driving or stopped

Fails the "Bounce Test"

Uneven tire tread wear

Difficulty Steering

Knock, clunk, or groan noise is heard on turns or bumps

Wheel shake/wobble at high speeds

Tips To Prevent Unnecessary Tire Wear

A Tire Rotation every 5,000 - 6,000 miles will extend the life of all your tires. Tires typically wear faster in the front so a tire rotation (moving the tires from the front to the back and vice versa) will keep all tires wearing at an even pace.

Keeping your tires filled with the proper amount of air pressure. Under inflated tires will wear faster on the edge while over inflated tired will wear faster in the center.

Keeping your tires properly balanced will prevent wheel wobble at high speeds and unnecessary tire tread wear.

Frequent checks of all suspension parts and replacing any parts that have gone bad will extend the life of your tires and make for a smoother ride.

A Wheel Alignment check is recommended every 2-3 years, whenever any suspension work is done to your vehicle, or any time a curb is hit at medium to high speeds. An uneven alignment will cause your tire tread to wear faster and unevenly. We charge nothing to check wheel alignments, we call it our peace of mind alignment check.
